Electromagnetic Profiling

Like many other near surface geophysical techniques, recent advancements in electronic design and manufacturing have greatly benefited electromagnetic instrumentation. The new electromagnetic devices are user friendly, lightweight, GPS controlled instruments enabling the user to collect extensive dataset over a relatively short period of time. Real time data interpretation is also possible.

Typical applications of electromagnetic profiling include:

  • Mapping terrain conductivity for grounding
  • Bedrock topography
  • Locating buried pipes and metallic conductors such as underground storage tank (UST)
  • Archaeology exploration
  • Geological investigation and surficial soil type and moisture mapping
  • Site assessment and selection
  • Groundwater investigation
  • Agricultural research

Gehrig, Inc. preferred electromagnetic instrument of choice can be configured to simultaneously measure up to three frequencies between 1000 Hz and 16,000 Hz. The system can be deployed in either the vertical or horizontal dipole mode. The output is the mutual coupling ratio in parts per million (PPM) for both the in-phase and quadrature or apparent conductivity (mS/m). The unit has been designed to acquiring vast amount of data over an extended area utilizing only one person.
